SMARTPHONE AS A CULTURAL ARTIFACT

Smartphone or mobile phone is a cellular telephone with built-in applications and it runs on Operating system capabilities. Smartphones are more advanced than normal mobile phones. Smartphones carry features such as instant mailing, web browsing, option for download free and paid application.  For an example: These days all smartphones are cellphones, but not all cellphones are smartphones. To qualify as a smartphone nowadays, the device must have at least a three to four-inch touch screen and be able to download apps from an online store.  

Let’s move and see what are the contemporary meanings encoded in the smartphones. 

Smartphones has become a necessity for lots of people throughout the planet. Today’s technically advanced mobile phones are not only capable of taking photos, web browsing, email but also stores extensive amount of data and  information as well as they provide their users channel of  instant sharing via numerous advanced apps.

These days’ smartphones runs on Android, Windows OS, Blackberry Palm OS and IOS. Smart phones have an effect on productivity, Communication in the work place, Social engagement and education.  Moreover, smartphones are multifunctional, allow user to transfer info in seconds to anywhere.

Moreover, due to Hand-Phone technologies people can communicate via Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace instead of making a phone call. In fact, thanks to smartphone technologies due to which personal information stay protected and confidential and people can carry any sort of content with them anywhere.

Currently, Media is a great recipient of smartphone technologies. Latest apps provide prompt photos and video editing options, besides these, smartphone cameras are capable to record high resolution and high quality photos & videos. Additionally, it permits user to share incident or news anywhere within a few seconds. For an instance: Smartphones gave arose to citizen journalism like lots of incidents were captured due to these technologies such as San- Franciso plane crash and London’s  helicopter crash.   
 











If we look upon recent and rapid diffusion of mobile information and communication technologies in American society as one maker of the arrival of a kind of ubiquitous computing. It was only a decade ago that Blackberry “RIM” combined its already popular email pager with cellular phone to produce the first iconic Blackberry smartphone but today,  market  are saturated with a variety of smartphones. Additionally, Smartphones are powerful cultural symbols in contemporary America.   

Furthermore, Mobile phone technology is growing at incredibly faster rate and now the people are not able to assume “what next?”  A smartphone can be extended through hundreds of add-on applications.
 

A Smartphone that is a modern cultural artifact emerging from the land-line telephone, now the cell phone has become a very useful object and modern cultural artifact with many purposes.  The telephone once was used to transmit voice and data but it is still best for distance application, its communication links can be established by wire connections. In addition, to replacing the older land-line telephones today we have smartphone that can serve in a single unit as multipurpose computer.

In this modern world, smartphones can be adapted and personalized by the user, displaying their identities, creativeness and sense of style. Besides, to the addition of new uses, smartphones will also see the attachment of rules of etiquette and appropriate use in the future.

Additionally, smartphones have a lot of different capabilities like they provide their users immediate access to the internet, which means that many things generally associated with a personal computer can now be done via a small, mobile device that one’s carries around literally everywhere. “They provide internet in your pockets”.

Smartphones are affecting our society and culture in a modern, trendy and useful way, Firstly; they have proven to be very convenient, for instance: we are now almost always connected with one another and we are able to access data anywhere. People are addictive to these, for example, when there are questions to be answered; one can retrieve the answers instantly by using a Smartphone to find the answers on the web.
 
This knowledge is gained by real life society ideas, from physical observations and as well as personal experience is also involved. To conclude, Smartphones will remain the norm in the mainstream society. More importantly, these mobile devices are enabling people to create their own micro-cultures and also quickly changing our social and cultural norms and values. Lastly, Smartphones devices are becoming increasingly more competent and the advent of new and fledgling technological advancement making everyday activities quicker and more convenient therefore, with smartphones, there is no going back. Once connected, it is hard to let go, as the experience is very addictive.

  1. In the coming years, I see a slight decline in the handphone industry because many new technologies are emerging. A good example of this technology is the Google Glasses

    Therefore we can conclude that even though there will be a market for mobile phones, but will see a decline in the industry because currently the mobile industry is at its maturity stage and can fall anytime in about 5-10 years.

  2. smartphones requires to have many more attractions to be at the top of list. There are variety of other gadgets available with more advanced fetures and facilites e.g. Ipad & Tabs. Therefore, smartphones are handy, east to use and provide the facilitiy of easy mobility.

  3. in my point of view, the demand of these smartphones will not decrease, rather it will grow with time as the smartphones are not much more popular in 3rd world countries. For instance, in USA culture, the use of technology plays a vital role in their daily life, for example, the meetings, their daily schedule and almost every aspect of their daily practices, but as every picture has two sides, if you see in the 3rd world countries as Pakistan, the smartphones will still take time to be adopted on a day-to-day basis. The demand of these smartphones will take time in increasing but I personally think that it will surely be common after certain period of time...
